The land of England

Yep. President of MARS here organizing matters to do with his upcoming trip to England.

MARS is going well, we have a new assistant training officer, he will be taking the brunt of the punishment that you guys dish out, and we’ve got twelve registered members. Hurrah. In actual news though the trip to England is looking good, it’s a pure research venture for work on my thesis, Mycenaean warfare, but hopefully while I’m up their I’ll be expanding my/MARS’ network of contacts for research. It’s cost about $6000 already so hopefully it will be beneficial.

ANDVARI’S RING AND THE BRISINGAMEN NECKLACE

Wagner made the story of Andvari’s ring famous in his RING CYCLE opera – where, however, Andvari’s place is taken by Alberich the ‘Elf-king’.  Tolkien also utilized the story of Andvari’s cursed ring to forge his mighty LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.  Yet behind these works of art and storytelling there is myth, raw and waiting to be tamed.  What I would like to do in this article is to first give a summary of the story of Andvari’s ring – as it is found in the Norse sources – and then to analyze it as a mythic construct.  Following this I will similarly treat of the Brisingamen myth.

THE GOD BELATUCADROS, THE EAMONT HENGES AND ARTHUR’S AND MERLIN’S STAG

The chief god of the ancient Carvetii or ‘Stag-people’ in Northwestern England was one Belatucadros.  We know very little about this god.  Most scholars have assumed that he must have been a horned deity, indeed a stag god, although no certain iconographic evidence has been found to confirm this supposition.  An image of a horned god was recovered in the form of a broken slab very near a dedication to Belatucadros at Burgh-By-Sands, Arthur’s ‘Avalon’ (see my “King Arthur: Shadows in the Mist”).  The horns on this god are quite short, however, and resemble any number of horned Romano-Celtic “Mars’ deities in the North.   Granted, Belatucadros himself is identified with Mars on the majority of the inscriptions.

This summer I was so lucky to be working in the smithy at Lofotr Vikinmuseum, a beautiful place with a lot of beautiful people. There was also a lot of good craftsmen there, people with knowledge of history, art and crafts that is way above the average. Still, some times I wonder, what is average today really?

Lönsboda Viking Market 2011

Conglomerate, noun:  a large corporation consisting of a group of companies dealing in widely diversified goods, services, etc.  Collins English Dictionary

Viking, noun:  Hardcore warriors that will pwen your sh*t. Superior to Pirates. Equal to Ninjas.  UrbanDictionary.com

With a trade network that included Europe, Asia, and North Africa, the Vikings were indeed a conglomerate.   Archeology and preserved texts give us commodities such as glass beads, walrus ivory, furs, textiles, seal fat, cod, earthenware, … a variety of goods similar to those we’d find at our local shopping mall today, in one form or another.  Take away the steel I beams and asphalt parking lots and one can see remnants of a Viking Market in the rows of kiosks nestled between the arsenals of Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, Sears, and Bloomingdale’s.

Is a blacksmith’s tale told in the stone, or is it a tale of the stone?  This was the fundamental question that consumed my thoughts upon reaching out and immersing myself in a labyrinth of wild tales, sagas and old family stories.
